Eagles and Sabercats Tie in Double OT
WATERTOWN, Wisconsin—If the first two matches this year against Maranatha Baptist were any indication of the upcoming regional tournament, a potential rematch to advance to the NCCAA National Championships is going to be a real humdinger.
One month after the Eagles defeated the Sabercats by the score of 1-0 in Ankeny, the rematch in Watertown resulted in a 1-1 tie in double overtime. Both teams have struggled to score goals against each other this season. Maranatha's only goal of the two matches has come on a penalty kick in the goal box, which occurred midway through the first half yesterday, giving them a 1-0 lead as the two teams went to halftime.
It only took the Eagles a few minutes to even the score in the second half after Lydia Trygstad scored her first goal of the season at the 49:06 mark. It would prove to be the final time either team would score the remainder of regulation and the two overtimes. Faith finished with seven shots on goal, while Maranatha managed five.
The chances that the two teams meet again in next week's regional is high. Faith is currently projected as the number one seed and would face the winner of Maranatha and North Central in the regional final on Saturday, November 6. Faith is the host school, but the game would be played on a neutral field at the MidAmerica Energy Company RecPlex in West Des Moines, Iowa.
