Women’s Soccer Ties BVU in Season Opener
STORM LAKE, Iowa—The Faith Eagles women's soccer team kicked off their season Thursday night with a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Buena Vista University—a much larger school than Faith with an average enrollment of approximately 2,000 students located in northwest Iowa.
The Beavers participate in the American Rivers Conference with schools like Wartburg, Loras, Simpson, Coe, and Central College, all located in Iowa. Although BVU struggled a season ago with a record of 0-8, they returned several key players and gave Coach Zack Barron's Eagles team all it could handle in the season opener.
After a full half of scoreless action, the Eagles struck first with a goal by Abigail Speichinger, 18 minutes into the second half. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the lead didn't last long as Buena Vista answered with a goal of their own seven minutes later. The entirety of the game was a defensive battle as both schools struggled to get shots on goal. At the end of regulation, the score remained 1-1, and overtime was in order.
The Eagles were unable to get a shot on goal in the first overtime and managed to avoid a late barrage of shots by Buena Vista, including one that hit the post with less than two minutes remaining. With the score still tied, the game went to a second and final overtime, where the Eagles managed to get one shot on goal by Kristin Yuan, which went wide. The Beavers had one final attempt to win the game with less than two minutes remaining once again, but Faith goalkeeper Alexa LaFleur made the save to end the game with the score at 1-1.
Overall stats for the two teams show how evenly matched they were. Both teams had six shots (three on goal), and two saves each. Buena Vista managed one corner kick, while Faith had none. Starters for the Eagles were Abigail Speichinger, Alison Lundberg, Karina Fritz, Kristin Yuan, Evelyn Holbert, Kierstan Fritz, Allison Yuan, Alana Ward, Brenna Penrod, and Lydia Trygstad.
The next game for the Eagles is Saturday, September 4, at home against Lincoln Christian. The game time is 2:00 p.m.
