Eagles Close Out Season Against Providence
(Ankeny, IA) - Faith men's basketball came up just short in the North Region quarterfinals.
The Eagles entered the North Region tournament as the #5 seed, taking on the #4 Providence University Pilots in a rematch of an early November matchup that saw the Eagles come out on top, 75-65.
The first several minutes did not go Faith's way as they came out slow and struggled to get consistent stops on defense. Less than ten minutes into the game, the Eagles saw themselves trailing by 13 points before a well-timed timeout set them up to bring the game back within reach. The Eagles went on a tear to finish the half, outscoring Providence 26-18 as they marched back into the game with 7 different players contributing to the comeback effort and the Eagles would go into halftime trailing 33-28.
The second half remained close the whole way through as Faith kept chipping away at the Pilots' lead, before they tied the game and took their first lead of the game with five minutes left. The rest of the game was a defensive battle as both teams went scoreless over the next two minutes. Providence managed to break the scoring drought with a basket and two quick free throws, but the Eagles earned those points right back and the game was tied with 2 seconds left on the clock. With overtime looming, Providence brought the ball up the court and drew a foul, hitting both free throws and while the Eagles put up a desperation three as the time expired, it would not fall and the Pilots would escape with the victory.
Mason Gorsh led all scoring with 22 points, and Gus Bunnell followed with 9 points and 8 rebounds.
On Tuesday, four Eagles were honored with All-Region awards:
Mason Gorsh: 2nd Team All-Region
Seth Freeman: All-Region Honorable Mention
James Busenitz: All-Region Honorable Mention
Andy Hecker: All-Region Honorable Mention
