Eagles Down the Warriors in Exciting Fashion
(Ankeny, IA) - Faith men's basketball hosted Union College on Tuesday in what would become an instant classic.
On Tuesday night, the Eagles and the Warriors from Union College had a battle that would come down to the final seconds.
The 1st half started out in a close battle as the Eagles jumped out to an early 10-7 lead with a 3 pointer from freshman Asa LaFluer. The lead changed numerous times until the Eagles controlled a small lead for the final 3 minutes of the half. The Eagles went into the half leading 41-37.
The Warriors cut into the Eagles lead early in the 2nd half and took the lead at the 15 minute mark at 47-46 with a layup from Danset Okemwa. The Eagles continued to battle as they regained and maintained the lead from the 11 minute mark all the way to under the 1 minute mark. The Warriors would not go down without a fight as they surged back from an 8 point deficit in the final minute to take a 2 point lead with a pair of free throws from Josh Kerongo.
In the final 25 seconds, the Eagles had the ball down 78-80. Eagles guard Mason Gorsh took a difficult 3 from the corner that hit the front of the rim and bounced right back to the shooter's area. Eagles guard Parker Lundburg quickly grabbed the ball, stepped back and drilled a 3. The crowd went bananas as Lundberg's teammates rushed to him in excitement after the Warriors called a quick timeout. The Warriors had 5 seconds to find a way to score. Out of the timeout, the Warriors attempted an off balance mid range that hit nothing but the backboard. Warriors center Blake Essex managed to get the rebound but was not able to attempt a shot in time before the buzzer sounded. In the end, the Eagles narrowly escaped a disappointed Warriors team 81-80 pushing their record to 4-1 and extending their win streak to 2 games.
Mason Gorsh led the Eagles in scoring with 17 points. Gus Bunnell and Andy Hecker added 11 and 12 points respectively.
