ANKENY, Iowa—If you like drama, you would have loved the ending to Saturday's season-opener for the Faith Eagles men's soccer team. Facing a Lincoln Christian squad that was 1-0 and coming off an impressive 10-0 win over Emmaus Bible College, the Eagles fought to the finish, winning in thrilling fashion on an overtime goal by freshman Soel Sein.
After a scoreless first half, both teams saved their scoring for a dramatic finish in the final minute—a sequence of events rarely seen in soccer. There was no score for the first 89 minutes of the 90-minute match until Lincoln Christian put one in the goal with 51 seconds remaining for a 1-0 lead that looked like it would doom the Eagles. Eight seconds later, the Eagles answered on an unassisted goal from Caleb Love, sending the game to overtime.
The Eagles capitalized off the huge momentum swing in overtime and got a quick goal from Soel Sein at the 94:04 mark which would be the game winner in a nearly miraculous finish. The Eagles were outshot 17-7 and committed 11 fouls to Lincoln's 7. Lincoln also owned the advantage in corner kicks with 6, compared to Faith's 2. In the end, the final score was the only thing that mattered, and the Eagles are 1-0.
It's a quick turnaround for the team as they travel to Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska on Tuesday to face the Warriors. Game time is 3 p.m.
