Saturday, September 8th, the Faith men's soccer team hosted their first conference game of the season since re-joining the Midwest Christian College Conference. Faith faced off against Barclay College, from Haviland, KS. Unfortunately, the Eagles came up short, falling 1-2 in overtime.
Barclay was able to get on the scoreboard in the second minute when the Eagles failed to clear the ball from inside the 18 yard box. The Bears took advantage of that with a well-placed shot from the corner of the box. Barclay's ability to score so quickly brought back memories of the dismal AIB game the week prior, but the Eagles were able to regroup and level the game at 1-1 before halftime. Freshman Adam Jones crossed a ball into Freshman JJ Parkhurst who put the ball off the crossbar before it bounced into the goal just beyond the goal line and then back out as Barclay's goalie grabbed it. The assistant referee was able indicate to the referee that the ball had crossed the line and the Eagles were awarded the equalizer.
The second half went back and forth with both teams creating scoring opportunities until the final fifteen minutes when Barclay began mounting consistent attacks and keeping the Eagles on their heels until the end of regulation. The overtime started the way regulation ended, with Barclay on the offensive. Just a few minutes into the sudden death period Barclay took advantage of a defensive breakdown and scored the game-winner.
Faith's next game is Thursday against Grace University in Ankeny at 4:00PM.
