Men Upset in Regional Semi-Final
The Eagle men fell to Providence University College in the regional semi-final this past week. The loss eliminates the Eagles from regional tournament play as well as an at-large opportunity at the NCCAA National Tournament. Faith is now 12-5-1 on the year.
Providence started the game with a lot of energy but the Eagles were able to withstand the pressure until they started creating their own chances. Midway through the half the Eagles forced Providence's goalkeeper to make two very good saves before they finally were able to break the deadlock from a corner kick. Aaron Jones served in a great cross that Josh Bray was able to put back across the face of goal past the keeper in the 33rd minute for his sixteenth goal of the year and Jones' tenth assist of the year. The lead was short-lived as Providence founds a hole the Eagles defense and evened the game at 1-1 in the 38th minute and remained there through the rest of the half.
The second half was much less productive for the Eagles and their struggles culminated in the 56th minute as Providence got behind the defense and were fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. They were able to put the ball in the net to take the lead and the momentum for the majority of the half. Faith served in a few dangerous crosses but were not able to get on the end of them during that time, and it was not until the final five minutes that Faith mounted real pressure. It was too little to late as the well-coached and experienced Pilots were able to withstand the pressure and preserve their lead. Providence went on to beat North Central University in the region championship 3-0.
Faith will compete November 6-8th in Joplin, MO for an ACCA National Championship. The Eagles earned the top seed and received a first round bye. The will play the winner of Hillsdale (OK) and Baptist Bible College (MO) on Friday at 6:00PM. If they win they will play at noon on Saturday for the championship, a loss will have them playing at 10am for third place.
