Backous Earns 100th Win as Eagles Advance to Regional Semifinals
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota—Coach Gary Backous earned his 100th career victory as the Faith men's soccer coach, and the Eagles advanced to Friday's regional semifinal match with a 5-1 victory over Trinity Bible College on Wednesday.
The last time one of Coach Backous's teams won on North Central's field, his team advanced to the NCCAA National Championships, so the green acre in downtown Minneapolis is becoming a great memory-maker and a friendly confine of sorts. He and his team hopes that trend continues into Friday and Saturday this week as the Eagles are now just two wins away from a trip to the 2022 NCCAA Division II National Championships in Kissimmee, Florida.
The Eagles showed how much they have improved offensively over the last few weeks, putting up five goals on the same team they tied 0-0 with at the end of September. Faith got on the scoreboard four times in the first half alone, getting a pair of goals from Joshua Forgie, one from James Busenitz, and one from Seth Elliott. Will Holst added a fifth Eagles goal in the second half as Faith ran away with it, 5-1.
Faith, who has won five games in a row, faces Crown College on Friday, November 4, at 9 a.m. in Minneapolis. Crown knocked Faith out of last season's regionals by the score of 3-1. If the Eagles advance to the regional final, it will be held on Saturday, November 5 at 1 p.m. at North Central University in Minneapolis. Faith is the #2 seed. Providence University is the #1 seed.
