ANKENY, Iowa—A two-minute stretch in the second half of a highly competitive soccer game was the difference in a 2-0 loss for the Faith Eagles in their Homecoming match against Maranatha on Saturday. One of the largest crowds in recent memory cheered on the hometown team in a game that came down to a pair of well-placed shots by the Sabercats late in the second half.
It was a physical and intense 90 minutes of action that saw three yellow cards and 19 fouls between the two teams. One of the fouls resulted in a perfectly placed kick by Maranatha's Braeden Hansel into the corner of the net at the 74:27 mark to give the Sabercats a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Maranatha answered again on a fast break and goal by Aaron Jones to put the Eagles in a two-goal deficit. It was an unfortunate two-minute stretch in an otherwise very evenly played game between two highly skilled teams.
Faith had nine shots (seven on goal), led by James Busenitz's four shots on goal. Maranatha finished with 22 shots (13 on goal).
With the loss, the Eagles fell to 5-3-2. Faith has another tough matchup on Saturday against Manhattan Christian College in Manhattan. Game time is 2 p.m. The Eagles defeated the Thunder 2-1 earlier this season.
