ANKENY, Iowa—A pair of wins over the weekend pushed the Eagles' winning streak to three games as the team settles back in for the semester, looking to regain the momentum it had at the beginning of the season.
The Eagles defeated Calvary University on Friday night by the score of 91-81, backed by a boisterous student section that had plenty of energy after an overnight blizzard canceled classes for the day, and by the hot shooting of Jayce Goergen, who led all scorers with 28 points on 8 of 14 shooting (4 of 8 from three).
The first half saw 31 ties and lead changes as the two teams traded jabs. The Eagles fell behind by as many as nine with just over five minutes to play but battled back to tie it, sending both teams to the locker room at 49 each.
Calvary came out firing to start the second half, building an eight-point lead, but the Eagles battled back once again, taking the lead with an Alex Owens three-point basket with 10:47 remaining. Owens had a pair of critical hoops off the bench during the rally. The Eagles held a one-point lead with 3:30 left to play and it looked certain that the game would be decided in the final minute, but Faith took care of business down the stretch to stretch the victory margin to 10.
On Saturday, Faith got season-highs in scoring from Jason Conable (21) and Christian Brown (7) en route to a 95-80 win over Ozark Christian. Jared Pearson led all scorers with 24 points. The Eagles shot over 50% for the fourth straight game since coming back from Christmas Break, and were 11 of 23 from three-point distance. With the win, the Eagles moved their record back over .500 at 6-5, and they have now scored 90 or more in three straight games.
Faith enters the final four weeks of the regular season with a road match at Spurgeon College on Monday at 6 p.m. It's a busy week of basketball with three straight days of home games to end the week on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
