The Eagle men earned two big MCCC victories this past weekend, defeating Barclay College (RV) and Manhattan Christian College (#10). The wins put Faith at 11-1-0 on the year and place them in sole possession of second place in the conference with one regular season match left. Faith stands at 5-1-0 in the conference on the year.
Friday night found the Eagles playing a late game under the lights. The Eagles played with energy and intensity and center midfielders Joseph Frerichs, Andrew Young, and Marcus Wilkes dominated the possession in the midfield. A solid defensive effort held the 2014 conference MVP Kingsley Assibey (#7) to only a few good shots throughout the game. The Eagles created a number of chances in the first half, but it was Chase Clark who was able to put the first goal away after creating a turnover in the box. Just minutes later, Chase scored a second goal off a beautiful pass from Cole Glanzer.
The Eagles came out even stronger in the second half, demonstrating excellent teamwork, and Christlike attitudes in the face of adversity, and were able to put away another goal in the second half - a cross from Chase Clark, finished by Nick Paine. Faith held Barclay scoreless for the rest of the half, earning the 3-0 victory.
Faith then traveled up to Manhattan Christian on Saturday looking to claim another conference win against a tough opponent. The Eagles were a bit tired from the previous day's game, and drained by the heat, and dry field which made for an exhausting battle. The eagles were on their heals for most of the first half, as Manhattan prevailed in the midfield possession for much of the first. The Eagles were abel to only earn a few transition opportunities. Overcoming the fatigue, hot conditions, and difficult field, the Eagles were much stronger in the second half creating more opportunities and playing a more balanced attack. The defense held strong to continue to keep the game scoreless, and finally, near the seventieth minute, Chase Clark took a strong shot from the outside which deflected off of a Manhattan defender just enough to misguide the keeper and carry the shot into the back of the net. Manhattan had another chance late in the game - a penalty kick - but missed it, and the Eagles were able to hold off the attack for the final 20 minutes of the game, creating a few excellent scoring opportunities of their own, but unable to capitalize on any of them.
Faith returns to action on Thursday, October 15 for a big game against region opponent North Central University. The winner will receive the #1 seed in the upcoming regional tournament and an all important first round bye. The game is set to kick off at 4pm.
