Ankeny, IA - A monster game from super senior Rachel Forgie Friday night jump-started an exciting weekend of Eagles volleyball for Faith this past Homecoming weekend. Faith won a dramatic come-from-behind 3-2 victory against Ozark Christian on Friday night, followed by a 3-1 win over Calvary University on Saturday.
Both games featured large, excited crowds as alumni and friends returned to campus for the homecoming festivities. Friday night's game with Ozark was a rematch of an early season game which Faith won easily 3-0. Ozark had different ideas for the rematch, as they jumped on Faith early and didn't relinquish the lead to take a set one 25-23 victory, followed by a set two 25-20 win. With Faith staring at a 0-2 hole, it looked like the visiting Ambassadors would spoil their homecoming match. Forgie had other ideas though, as her inspired play reignited the Eagles in the ensuing sets. Behind her consistent attack, the Eagles rolled to consecutive 25-14 victories in sets three and four and were suddenly looking at snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Faith left no doubt in the deciding fifth set, exploding out of the gates for an 11-0 lead before cruising to a 15-3 set and match victory. Forgie led the Eagles with 26 kills in the match.
Saturday's match against Calvary was also the second match of the year for Faith with the Warriors. The Eagles defeated Calvary earlier in the year 3-1. A win for Faith in this match would secure the regular season runner-up and #2 seed for Faith in the upcoming MCC Conference tournament.
Set one found Faith in control early as they won the first set 25-18. Calvary refused to go down without a fight, though, as they battled back to take set two by a 25-23 score. In set three, the Eagles regained their composure, jumping out to a quick five-point lead, which they would maintain through for a 25-20 victory. Set four was a similar affair for the Eagles, as they took the set 25-19, winning the match 3-1. Forgie notched another 12 kills in the match. Her weekend performance earned her NCCAA Offensive Player of the Week recognition. Freshman Codie Wirges added 13 kills of her own to go along with 15 digs. Reagan McPeek had three serving aces and 31 assists.
Faith moves to 15-6 on the year and is currently ranked 8th in the NCCAA Coaches poll and has locked up regular-season runner-up and the #2 seed in the upcoming Midwest Christian College Conference Tournament. Faith will hit the road on Tuesday, October 17 when they will travel to Kansas City to take on Spurgeon College. First serve for that game is scheduled for 6 PM.
