MANKATO, Minnesota—After winning their last four contests by a combined score of 30-3, the Faith Eagles women's soccer team was in need of some rugged competition. They got it Monday night in Mankato, Minnesota, facing the Bethany Lutheran Vikings (4-4) in a makeup game that was rained out last week.
Bethany Lutheran's Bailey Bakken was the first to score at 19:39 in the first half. Bakken is the Vikings' leading scorer with seven goals on the year.
Twenty-one minutes later, with time winding down in the first half, Molleigh Adams-Freund pulled the Eagles even at one apiece off a penalty kick. The halftime score remained 1-1.
After intermission, the two teams played even soccer for nearly the entire second half. While the Vikings continued to apply the pressure to the Faith defense, outshooting the Eagles nine to four in the second half, Faith goalie Kallie Gibson answered the call time after time, finishing the game with nine saves.
With the game in the balance and less than ten minutes to play, Bailey Bakken struck again for the Vikings with her second goal of the game at 81:13. The goal would end up being the game-winner, with Bethany Lutheran handing the Eagles their second loss of the season, 2-1.
Faith has the rest of the week off before a pivotal week of home games next week against Nebraska Christian (0-4) on Monday, and conference foes Providence University College (4-2, ranked #3) on Thursday, and North Central University (3-4) on Saturday.
