Men Post Win in Last Regular Season Home Game
In their last home game of the regular season, Faith honored their 2 four-year seniors, Jason Scheps and Jon Luke Talton during the pregame. Through their playing careers, Jon Luke Talton has averaged 14.1 PPG and 5.5 RPG, and Jason Scheps has a 65 percent shooting average from the field.
The game against Kansas Christian College (Overland Park, KS) was the Eagles' opportunity to avenge their last meeting with the Falcons, where they lost on free throws at the last second. It was a sloppy contest for both teams. Even though Faith had 27 turnovers and Kansas Christian had 22, neither team was able to capitalize on these scoring opportunities, keeping the game close throughout.
With the way the game started, it looked like it was going to be a long night for the Eagles. Faith turned the ball over 7 times in just the first five minutes; but despite the turnovers, Kansas Christian was only up 7-4. The Eagles went on another five minute span where they committed 6 more turnovers. During this stretch, Kansas Christian still struggled to capitalize on Faith's mistakes but was able to take an 18-9 advantage over the Eagles. Faith would clean up their play on the offensive end, minimizing turnovers and cutting the deficit to four before Kansas Christian pulled ahead again.
The Eagles felt a spark of energy when Jon Luke Talton was fouled on a three-point shot. Talton knocked down the shot and then went to the stripe to sink the free throw, completing the 4 point play and beginning an 8-0 run for the Eagles to tie the score at 30-30. The Falcons held a slight lead, 35-32, over Faith at the break.
Kansas Christian came out of halftime running and extended their lead to its largest yet, 43-32. Faith slowly chipped away at it, and by the 10:00 mark, the Eagles took control of the lead for the first time since the score was 4-2 at the beginning of the game.
With 45 seconds left, Faith had possession of a 69-66 lead, but Kansas Christian got a quick two to make it a one point game. The Eagles only converted on one of the two free throws that came from Kansas Christian's foul, giving the Falcons the option to either go for the tie or the win with the last shot. Kansas Christian got a good look at a three-point shot but couldn't put it through the net. While a Falcon player was able to get the offensive rebound from the shot, Jon Luke Talton's steal forced the Falcons to foul with .5 seconds left. After making the first, Talton missed the second free throw, allowing the clock to run out and keeping Kansas Christian from getting a chance for a tip-in play.
Both seniors Jason Scheps and Jon Luke Talton ended the game with 13 points. Tanner Van Beek came off the bench and also contributed 13 points. Faith dominated Kansas Christian in the rebound column, outrebounding the Falcons 45-26. Chase Clark played a huge part in that, as he ended with 13 rebounds. Scheps grabbed 6 rebounds of his own, and Van Beek had 7.
Faith will make the short trip to Grand View University (Des Moines, IA) on Monday, February 6, for an exhibition game at 7:30 PM.
