Lady Eagles Rally for Five Set Road Win
The Faith volleyball team had to be resilient this past Tuesday evening against an inspired Union College. The Eagles did not find victory until a grinding 5th set 15-10 victory.
Union began the match strong winning set one 25-21 and holding Faith to a negative .22 attack percentage. In set two Faith brought their attack to 17.8% and a 26-24 win which saw them down as many as six points. "We struggled with consistency and team attack all night. The second set really helped us to gain confidence and hang in there and realize we had to be resilient," noted coach Nihart.
Set three saw the Eagles reverse their fortunes being on the end of a 25-21 loss. Set four had the Eagles with three set points before finally prevailing 30-28. With Rocha leading the way and Union miscues the Eagles were able to get to the 5th set.
In the 5th set Faith held 2-0 and 8-6 leads at the exchange of court sides. The Eagles were then able to put together the best consistency all night by outscoring Union 7-3. Faith was led by senior Julia Rocha with 22 kills and 16 digs and sophomore Kim Post with 16 kills and 24 digs.
Junior Natalie Bunjer led the team defensively with 33 digs while sophomore JoJo Hodak added 32 digs and 14 kills. "We had 132 digs, by far the most during the year. That stat alone is telling of the difficult time we had getting offensive pressure. Hopefully we will be able to bring speed up our attack and execute free balls going forward," noted Nihart.
The Eagles are now 12-9 on the year and 2-1 in MCCC conference play.
