The Faith volleyball team found themselves accepting a .500 record in their own invitational Spikefest Tournament as a rally point for the new year. Faith finished 5th out of 8 teams which included 5 teams from the 2011 NCCAA National Tournament. The Eagles defeated Northland International 3-0 and two time NCCAA national runner up Ozark Christian College 3-1 while losing to Manhattan Christian 3-0 and Providence University College 3-1. "Spikefest is annually a very competitive tournament. We want a tournament that creates a sense of early season national flavor and gives coaches and players a gauge on their teams status. I am excited about the way we entered and exited this year's tourney and the way we battled despite a few injuries. We have recognized there exists alot of potential in this year's team," noted head coach Lanny Nihart.
Faith defeated Northland in pool play with junior middle hitter Julia Bray contributing 6 kills and a .25 attack percent and defensively senior libero Rikki Powell with 14 digs. The Eagles then lost to NCCAA region rival Providence University College 21-25,25-12,25-20 and 25-19. Again Bray led the offensive attack with 12 kills and 2 service aces and Ariel Dicks with 6 kills and 7 digs. "We really did some good transition in the Northland match and continued that movement into the Providence match. Ariel showed herself a valuable of our offensive attack with some key right side kills. I was pleased in the way we responded in the 3rd set of the Providence match and did not wilt away. Our fan's deserved that effort!" noted Nihart.
Faith then matched up against eventual runner up Manhattan Christian. The Eagles again pushed the Crusaders to the limit in set one only losing in the end 25-21. MCC controlled set two 25-16 and finished by winning set three 25-15. The Eagles then won the 5th place match over Ozark Christian College 25-15,23-25,25-15 and 25-23. Dicks, who was named to the all tournament team, led Faith with 10 kills, 9 digs and 100% serving. "Ariel deserved her recognition with her play this weekend. It is always nice to see seniors be rewarded for their committment," cited Nihart.
The Eagles now 2-3 on the season will travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota next weekend for showdowns with regional teams with signifiant impact on future seedings.
