Kirkwood Qualifies for National Meet
The Faith Track & Field team has been working hard since mid-February, preparing to serve the Lord with the talents He has given to each one. Saturday April 9th marked the first meet of the season for the team, and everyone was excited, despite the frigid temperatures and cold wind.
Freshman Wendy Busenitz started the day off for the team by winning her heat of the 1500 meter run in a time of 5:28, finishing nearly 100 meters ahead of the second place finisher! Sophomore Rebecca Reinertson and Freshman Micah Cressey were up next with the 100 meter dash. Rebecca finished third in her heat with a time of 14.7, and Micah finished with a time of 14.0.
The 400 meter event was next, and Freshman Evan McKinney and Rebecca each ran well in that event. Rebecca ran the oval around the track in a time of 70.5 seconds, and Evan completed it in 57.9. Next came the 800 meter run, and Wendy was up again, running the 2 lap race in a time of 2:36 and winning her heat by 10 seconds. With just a short time for recovery, Evan was up again for the 400 meter hurdles event. He cleared every hurdle well and finished strong with a time of 64 seconds! The final running event for the Faith team was the 200 meter dash. Rebecca covered the distance with a time of 31.0, and Micah in a time of 29.4 seconds.
Freshman Jacob Kirkwood did extremely well in the throwing events for the team. He placed 7th in the discus with a throw of 42.45 meters (over 139 feet!), qualifying for the NCCAA National Track Meet which will be held May 13th-14th in Rome, Georgia! Jake also finished in 7th place in the shot put with a throw of 12.72 meters, which is just shy of the 13 meter mark required to qualify for Nationals in that event. He will be working hard to throw that distance in one of our upcoming meets.
We were thankful for the 3 Faith students who made the 2+ hour trip to cheer on the team! This weekend we will be in Sioux City at Morningside College for the Sioux City Relays both Friday and Saturday. We appreciate your prayers as we continue to honor the Lord throughout the remainder of the season!
