Fourth Quarter Woes Destroy Hopes of a Third Straight Win for Lady Eagles

ANKENY, Iowa—The Faith Eagles women's basketball team led the Calvary Warriors for most of 40 minutes Friday night, but the last five minutes were the backbreaker, as Calvary pulled away for the 61-55 victory. The Eagles' fourth-quarter combination of turnovers and poor shooting were roadblocks in a chance at a third straight win.

After falling behind 6-2 to start the game, Faith battled back to regain the lead with a Lyndi Shepard three-pointer, which was part of a 12-0 run for the Eagles in the first quarter. Faith led the majority of the first half until the 2:16 mark in the second quarter when Calvary regained the lead at 27-26. The game was tied at halftime, 30-30. Faith was just 5-of-17 shooting in the second quarter, with several misses at point-blank range that they surely wish they could have gotten back in the end.

Faith's defense buckled down in a strong third quarter, holding Calvary to just six points on 2-of-16 shooting. It was a sloppy ten-minute stretch for both teams, who combined for 15 turnovers in the third quarter alone, but Faith stretched its lead to 41-36 heading into the fourth quarter.

Eight more turnovers by the Eagles in the fourth quarter, combined with 9-of-16 shooting by the Warriors was the difference down the stretch as Calvary pulled away for the six-point win. Overall, the Eagles turned the ball over 29 times and were just 2-of-19 from three-point distance.

Three players scored in double figures for Faith: Michaela Crider (14), Makenna Laib (11), and Rachel Kleczka (10).

Faith (3-10) returns to action Tuesday afternoon against Emmaus Bible College (9-6) at 4:00 p.m. in Ankeny.
