Eagles Notch Home Win against Calvary
By Jonathan Crossman
ANKENY, Iowa – The Eagles began their Homecoming Week games with a pronounced win over Calvary University, landing back in the win column. Supported by fans who trickled in after the men's soccer game, many of whom were wearing 'tropical gear' as part of the theme night, the Eagles were able to coast to victory in the first three sets against the visiting Warriors. This victory came after a challenging away trip last weekend for the Eagles, so it's sure to boost their positive mentality in the upcoming slate of home games.
The first set was a clean and decisive battle for the Eagles, staying ahead of the Warriors by at least 10 in between serving exchanges for the majority of the set. The Eagles front row did a good job of keeping the ball down on the other side, leaving Calvary with very few chances to score off of serves. The second set was a bit of a closer outcome, with the final few serves of the game only leaving a small margin between the two teams. With the Warriors reserves starting to mount a small comeback, the Eagles front row stepped up once again to finish them off in blocks. The third and final set had about the same outcome as the first, with Calvary's players being too exhausted from the first two defeats, allowing the Eagles to win by 8 points and close out of the game without having to worry about another set.
Players that performed with excellence were Krystal Wikstrom, who capitalized on her height and her teammates setting power for 7 of the teams kills, and Morgan Stephens, who led the team once again in digs with 16 digs and kept the play alive off some powerful hits by the Warriors top players.
The Eagles (4-3) play again at home on the 18th against Manhattan Christian College, starting at 4:00 p.m.
