Volleyball Earns Road Victory
September 24, 2015
The Faith volleyball team traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska on Tuesday to take on Union College for the second time this season. Faith had captured an earlier match victory on September 1st by a 3-0 score.
Union started strong in the rematch taking early 7-3 and 12-10 leads in set one. Faith, behind the efforts of middle Samantha Betz, made a strong comeback. Establishing the middle with Betz, Faith took a late 22-2-0 lead and won the match 25-22. Betz led Faith with a match high 13 kills and 2 blocks.
Set two found the Eagles gaining confidence and taking a large 14-6 lead. The Eagles continued to defend Union and extended the lead to 22-14, capturing the set 25-19. "We played very good defensive and gained some confidence in our ability to handle the ball. Our secondary setters were very alert to where to send the ball." stated coach Lanny Nihart.
Set three found the Eagles behind the entire set losing 25-18. Union was able to force a number of Eagle turnovers. "We reverted to our achilles heel which is limiting ball control errors by playing smart volleyball. We had done well the first two sets but lost focus in set three", noted coach Nihart.
Set four placed the Eagles in a difficult position on the road. Both teams battled well and found themselves tied on four occasions. With senior Kim Post serving the Eagles were able to go on a 6-0 scoring streak taking control of the set and winning 25-18. "We gained confidence with this team win tonight. Winning on the road and without our two leading hitters out (Emily Wolfe and Allysa Larson) it was great seeing others step. We reminded ourselves everyone needed to do their job and we actually had enthusiasm as a team in doing that", noted Nihart.
Betz led offensively, with senior Kim Post adding 12 kills and 29 digs and senior Jo Hodak with 12 kills and team high 32 digs. Setter Emilie Morton had 35 assists.
Faith is now 7-7 overall. They will return to action on Friday when they will take on conference opponent Central Christian College of the Bible. That game will tip at 8:00 PM.
