ANKENY, Iowa—After two close losses to start the season, the Faith women's soccer team is back in the win column. The Eagles defeated Manhattan Christian College on a warm, sun-drenched Tuesday afternoon by the score of 3-0 in front of the largest crowd of the year.
The 2020 fall sports season hasn't been a smooth one for most colleges and universities across the country. All of the stops and starts, postponements, cancellations, and unknowns due to the coronavirus have made it difficult to gain any kind of momentum or traction, but the Eagles hope Tuesday's win will get them back into their groove that they found last season.
Faith outshot Manhattan Christian 19-3, with the first ball finding the net at the 13:55 mark on a shot by Abby Zollinger, assisted by Erika Brown and Abigail Speichinger. Two more Eagles scored in the first half (Abigail Speichinger and Molleigh Adams-Freund) to make it 3-0 at halftime.
Manhattan's defense stiffened in the second half, but the Eagles' 3-0 lead held throughout the rest of the game, thanks to a solid effort on the defensive end. Goalies Rebecca Sturgis and Alexa LaFleur combined for the shutout with 45 minutes each. Coach Barron was able to get valuable playing minutes for his bench as 18 players saw at least 10 minutes of action.
The Eagles return to action this Saturday in a rivalry matchup against Maranatha Baptist University at 2:30 p.m. in Ankeny.
