ALTOONA, Iowa—The Faith Eagles women's soccer team soared to the third spot in the most recent NCCAA Division II national rankings, released Tuesday afternoon, which was about the same time they fell to William Penn University by the very respectable score of 2-1. William Penn plays at the NAIA level, which is several levels higher than Faith.
After two quick shots on goal within the first two minutes, William Penn struck first with a goal at the 11:25 mark, but the Eagles clamped down on the Statesman for the remainder of the half, saving seven more shots on goal. The Eagles were outshot 12-0 in the first half as William Penn dominated possession on offense.
The Eagles fell behind 2-0 quickly in the second half after a goal by the Statesman got by the Eagles' defense less than two minutes into action. It looked like it could be a long afternoon for Faith, but the defense continued to hold its ground despite a flurry of shots on goal by William Penn.
Faith finally broke through at the 72-minute mark with a goal by Lyndi Shepard to cut the score to 2-1. The Eagles had a chance to tie the game with three minutes to go, but another shot by Shepard was saved by the William Penn goalie as the Eagles fell by the final score of 2-1.
William Penn finished with 18 shots on goal, compared to just five for the Eagles.
