ANKENY, Iowa—The Faith Eagles women's soccer team accomplished a rare feat Monday night in a home contest against Iowa Wesleyan, getting hat tricks from two different players (Lyndi Shepard and Abigail Speichinger) in a 10-1 blowout victory.
Monday's matchup was the second in less than a week against Iowa Wesleyan. Last week, the Eagles won by a score of 2-0. This time, the Eagles scored seven goals by halftime.
Abigail Speichinger got things going for Faith with the first of her three goals at the 10-minute mark of the first half. Abby Zollinger added a goal four minutes later to make it 2-0.
It was a ten-minute stretch in the middle of the first half when Faith really poured it on, scoring four more times during that span. Lyndi Shepard scored all three of her goals during that stretch; Speichinger added her second. Allison Yuan, who has battled an injury all season, scored her first goal of the year shortly before halftime to make it 7-0. Yuan played a season-high 43 minutes in the win.
Yuan added another goal shortly after halftime, followed by Speichinger's third goal of the game to make it 9-0. Aubree Smith finished off the scoring with her fourth of the season. The shutout was in place until the final seconds of the game when Iowa Wesleyan caught the Eagles off-guard and made it 10-1.
The Eagles improved to 6-3 with the victory and are ranked #5 in the nation in NCCAA Division II. Faith returns to action on Thursday for Senior Night in Ankeny at 2:00 p.m. against Nebraska Christian College (1-3). Nebraska Christian's one win came against a common opponent to the Eagles (Manhattan Christian), whom they defeated 5-1, while Faith defeated the same opponent 5-0.
