WATERTOWN, Wisconsin—The Lady Eagles gave it their all, but came up just short of a gigantic upset in the first round of the NCCAA regional tournament.
The Faith Eagles women's soccer team played neck and neck with the second-ranked team in the nation for most of the game Friday morning, but a late surge in the second half by the Providence Pilots brought the Eagles' season to an end with a score of 3-0.
Faith's defense was spectacular, holding the Pilots scoreless for the first 70 minutes of action, coming up with gutsy stops every time it looked like Providence would score.
With just 20 minutes remaining, and a 0-0 tie, Providence broke through on a goal by Kristy Yashuk, to put the Eagles in a 1-0 hole. A little over a minute later, the Pilots distanced themselves with another goal which put Faith in a deflating deficit of 2-0 with time running out. Providence added their third goal at the 81:32 mark.
It was an emotional ending to a great season by the Faith women's soccer team—a team that left it all on the field on Friday. The Eagles finished the season with a record of 5-7 overall. Four of the seven losses came to opponents ranked in the top 5.
