Women's Soccer Earns Tough Road Win
Faith traveled to Lincoln, Illinois, on Saturday to compete against an inspired team from Lincoln Christian College. The Red Lions of Lincoln had defeated their previous two opponents by a combined 24-3 margin, so the Lady Eagles knew that a victory would not come easily.
Faith scored first when freshman Krista Peters broke through the Red Lion's defense to score on a breakaway goal 17 minutes into the contest. There were no more goals scored in the first half, and Lincoln Christian rallied to tie the score with a goal by Elizabeth Langley shortly after halftime. "I was concerned about the direction the game was heading at that point," commented Coach Mark Stupka. "We had controlled the ball pretty well and had outshot them, but momentum was turning, and we had some key players out with injuries."
Fortunately, the Lady Eagles battled back to score two goals and earn a 3 – 1 victory. Krista Peters scored her second goal of the contest off of an assist from junior Dani Paup at the 80 minute mark. Then freshman Rebekah Stilwell sealed the win with five minutes remaining in the game by scoring the first goal of her career. Stillwell kicked the ball into the goal after Liz Hemsworth had dribbled to the goal on a breakaway and passed the ball past Lincoln's goalie. "That was an exciting finish - the team showed a lot of poise today by coming back with those two late goals," added Coach Stupka. "Even though this team is young, they showed a lot of maturity today."
The win evened the Lady Eagles' record at 5 – 5 for the season. Faith will compete again at 3 P.M. at home on Tuesday, October 15, against Stephen's College.
