MANHATTAN, Kansas—The state of Kansas has a rich history of college basketball, and is a consistent hotbed of hoops success. The inventor of the game itself, James Naismith, was the first-ever college basketball coach at Kansas University, which has since featured Wilt Chamberlain, Danny Manning, 15 Final Fours, and three NCAA championships.
It's also the home state of Faith freshman Rachel Kleczka, who used a weekend homecoming of sorts back to her home state to put up more eye-popping stats, grabbing 29 rebounds at Barclay College on Friday night, and 15 more on Saturday against Manhattan Christian College. Although the Eagles lost both of those games, Kleczka's 44 rebounds over the weekend put her in position to break the all-time single-season records at Faith for most rebounds in a season, and most rebounds per game in a season.
The school record for most rebounds in a season is held by Meghan DeBerg, who set the mark of 316 in the 2008-2009 season. Kleczka currently sits at 302, with at least one game to play in the conference tournaments this week.
The school record for the highest rebounding average in a season is 13.8, set by Bev Fincham in 1981-1982. Kleczka currently sits at 14.4 rebounds per game.
Rachel currently ranks number one in all of NCCAA Division II women's basketball with 302 rebounds. She ranks second in the NCCAA Division II in rebounding average, behind Rashida Cheddick of Southeastern Baptist, who is averaging 15.7 rebounds in just 11 games played.
The Eagles fell to Barclay College, 67-51, on Friday night. Kleczka's 29 rebounds were just two shy of her current school record of 31, set on January 14.
Faith traveled to Manhattan, Kansas, on Saturday, where they fell 86-71. Kleczka led the way in scoring and rebounding in the loss with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
The Eagles will travel to Joplin, Missouri this Thursday for the conference tournaments, where Kleczka will have a chance to break the all-time single-season rebounding mark, and the Eagles will have one more chance at getting into the win column.
