Three-Pointers Bury Eagles at Kansas Christian
OVERLAND PARK, Kansas—It was a "tale of two halves" for the Faith Eagles women's basketball team Monday night in a rescheduled game against the Kansas Christian Falcons. The Eagles jumped to an 18-13 lead and led by one at halftime, but the second-half shooting of the Falcons dashed the Eagles' hopes of picking up a nice win on the road. Kansas Christian's 11 three-pointers were the difference in the game.
Faith utilized a balanced scoring attack in the first quarter, with four different players scoring at least four points, while Kansas Christian struggled to shoot the basketball, making just three of their first 20 shot attempts.
Despite their first quarter struggles, the Falcons began to heat up in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 18-14 to cut the deficit to one by halftime. Faith's defense struggled to contain Jaquela Stewart of the Falcons, who scored 10 points in the frame.
The Eagles lost their grip on the lead after halftime as Kansas Christian's Quaneisha Davis erupted for 13 points on a perfect 5-5 shooting in the third quarter, including 3-3 from three-point distance. Her three-point basket with 3:53 remaining in the third quarter gave the Falcons the lead back at 43-41. Every time Faith rallied, Davis answered with another big three.
Faith kept the game within striking distance, trailing by just two points with 8:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Falcons gradually stretched their lead to 10 with 4:18 to go and won the game 75-65.
Lyndi Shepard led the Eagles in scoring with 17 points. Bekah Smith and Michaela Crider added 15 each. Karina Smith finished with 10 points and 10 assists, while Alicia Smith added 7 points and Loretta Gamboe rounded out the scoring with one point for the Eagles.
With the loss, the Eagles fell to 9-12 overall. They will play in Dubuque this Thursday in the opening round of the NCCAA North Regional Tournament against an opponent to be determined.
