Cold Shooting and Turnovers Doom Lady Eagles in Home Opener
ANKENY, Iowa—A scrappy Providence Pilots defense held the Faith Eagles under 24% shooting and forced 30 turnovers to spoil the home opener for Faith. The Eagles fell, 55-39, dropping their record to 1-1 on the season.
Faith turned the ball over on four of its first eight possessions allowing Providence to jump to an early 7-0 lead. The Eagles answered with seven straight points after a Lyndi Shepard three-pointer, tying the game at seven each with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Their first lead of the game came with 1:31 left in the first quarter on a made basket by Mackenzie Hanson. It would be the only lead of the game for Faith. The Eagles trailed by just a point after the first quarter, 12-11.
Providence began the second quarter on a 7-0 run and used that momentum to propel them to a 28-22 halftime lead. Faith had twice as many turnovers (8) as baskets (4) in the quarter.
The Eagles closed to within three on a three-pointer by Lyndi Shepard early in the third quarter, but a 5-0 run by the Pilots stretched the lead back to eight, which was the closest the Eagles would get the rest of the evening.
The fourth quarter lead swelled to 17 and remained in that range to the finish.
For the Eagles, Lyndi Shepard was the lone player in double digits with 12 points. Janet Busenitz had a solid game off the bench with 8.
Faith begins action tonight in the Faith Classic at 6:00 p.m. against Ozark Christian College (0-1) in the Nettleton Center. The Eagles conclude a busy week of basketball action Saturday afternoon in the final game of the Faith Classic against Randall University (1-5).
