Lady Eagles Open Season with Strong Win
The Faith women's basketball team opened their season Tuesday night against Union College (Lincoln, NE). The Eagles jumped out to an early lead over the Warriors and never looked back, ending with a 65-39 advantage and earning their first win of the year.
Scoring started out slow in the first quarter, as Union led 6-4 with five minutes left; but the Eagles took advantage of Union's 9 turnovers in the last five minutes to end the quarter on a 17-2 run, giving them a 21-6 lead. Offense was low in the second quarter for both teams. The Eagles shot just 4-16, while Union shot 5-16. Despite the struggle of getting shots to fall, Faith took a 32-16 lead into halftime.
The Lady Eagles had another explosion of offense in the third quarter, again taking advantage of Union's turnovers. Faith outscored the Warriors 20-9 and increased their lead to 52-25, after closing out the quarter on a 16-2 run. Faith maintained their lead through the final ten minutes and secured the 65-39 win. The Eagles were led by freshman Bekah Smith, posting a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Lyndi Shepard added 14 points and 6 assists, while Mackenzie Hanson, also a freshman, contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds.
Faith's next games are this weekend, when Faith hosts their annual Faith Classic Basketball Tournament. They will go up against Trinity Bible College (Ellendale, ND) on Friday at 6 PM then turn around and play AFLBS (Plymouth, MN), Saturday at 4 PM.
