ANKENY, Iowa—There is never an easy way to lose a game, but giving up a winning score in the final seconds may be the most painful of all. That's exactly what happened to the Faith Eagles men's soccer team on Saturday, as Maranatha scored the game's winning goal with just 22 seconds remaining.
The day started great for the Eagles, who jumped to a quick 1-0 lead on a goal from Joseph Conable approaching the ten minute mark of the first half. The Eagles had several other great opportunities to score in the half, but were unable to capitalize, mostly due to some terrific goalkeeping by Maranatha's Tim Kinzler. Meanwhile, Faith's defense held the Sabercats scoreless through the first 45 minutes.
Maranatha scored its first goal of the game five minutes into the second half, tying the score at one. After 38 minutes of scoreless action, the Sabercats utilized a well-placed corner kick and header into the net for the winning goal. With the loss, the Eagles fell to 1-3 on the season.
Faith has a quick turnaround and a chance to erase the memory of Saturday's painful loss with a game on Monday at 3 p.m. against Manhattan Christian College (4-2) in Ankeny. The Thunder are coming off a 16-1 win over Barclay and are averaging nearly seven goals per game.
