Eagles Win Overtime Thriller!
ANKENY, Iowa—The Faith Eagles men's soccer team jumped back in the win column in dramatic fashion Tuesday evening with a 2-1 overtime win over Union College.
It was a cold and blustery afternoon at Pyche Field as the season hit the final corner-turn. The Eagles were riding a four-game losing streak after a tough road trip to the south and western parts of the United States last weekend.
The wind created significant challenges for both teams, making it difficult to pass and score. There was no score at halftime.
Early in the second half, Union College broke the scoreless tie with a bunched-up scrum near the Eagles' net. One of the Warriors offensive players got a foot on a ball and squeezed it through multiple Faith defenders for the score.
Fifteen minutes later, with the Eagles struggling on offense, Chase Clark broke the ice with a goal at the 64-minute mark that tied things up, and Faith had renewed enthusiasm and life. It would prove to be the only goal in regulation as the game advanced to overtime, the second of the year for the Eagles.
With just under five minutes remaining in the first overtime, the "Zollinger Connection" put the game in the win column for the Eagles as Noah Zollinger made a pass to younger brother Josiah for the game-winning goal.
The Eagles finished with 10 shots on goal versus seven for the Warriors. Faith improved to 6-8 with the victory, and faces rival Emmaus twice this week—once on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. in Dubuque, and again on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Ankeny. Emmaus is 2-7-1 on the season, but has played a challenging schedule to this point and is always a difficult matchup for Faith.
