ANKENY, Iowa—The men's soccer team capped a successful weekend on Saturday with a 1-0 thriller over Ozark Christian College, pushing their conference record to 3-1, and their overall record to 5-4. The Eagles defeated Calvary University on Friday by the score of 3-1. Faith has won three of its last four games, heading into a big matchup with rival Emmaus on Tuesday afternoon in Dubuque, Iowa.
Friday vs. Calvary University
The game was interrupted about five minutes into action after a close lightning strike forced a 30-minute weather delay. Following the resumption of the game, Chase Clark scored his first goal of the season (assisted by Jacob Stilwell), giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Calvary answered ten minutes later to tie it at one.
At the 37:35 mark, Jacob Stilwell gave the Eagles the lead once again with a goal, assisted by Josiah Zollinger. The 2-1 lead remained through halftime.
Lightning struck again early in the second half—this time off the thunderous foot of Josiah Zollinger—as the Eagles pounced for a quick goal less than three minutes into the half. The 3-1 lead was all the cushion Faith needed as the defense held its ground for the remainder of the game.
Calvary managed seven shots on goal, while Faith attacked for 17.
Saturday vs. Ozark Christian
Saturday's game against Ozark Christian was an evenly-matched, nail-biting thriller. The Eagles controlled possession of the ball much of the first half, outshooting Ozark 10-5. They just couldn't get the ball to go in the net, with several near-misses.
The second half, Ozark flipped the script, outshooting the Eagles 11-5, but the only goal that mattered came at the 77:52 mark when Josiah Choi capitalized off a fast-break and hammered a kick into the left corner of the net for the only score of the game for either team. Jason Conable had numerous heart-stopping saves down the stretch to preserve the victory for the Eagles.
Up Next
The Eagles face conference foe Emmaus on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in Dubuque, Iowa. Emmaus is 2-6 but has won two of its last three, including a 1-0 win over Calvary and a 1-1 tie with Ozark Christian, so the rivalry game looks to be another nail-biter for Faith in an important mid-season matchup.
