ANKENY, IOWA—When Coach Jordan Sauser and Athletic Director Brian Fincham sat down and put this season's men's soccer schedule together, they purposely loaded it with difficult opponents. They opened with North Central University (the defending national champions) and Randall University (a school with more than five times the enrollment of Faith), whom the Eagles lost to on Saturday by the score of 4-1.
"Normally, we have to have a winning record (or close to it) against Christian college competition to qualify for the regional tournament," said Sauser. "This year, that doesn't apply since we are hosting the regionals, so we made the schedule a little tougher than we have in the past."
The Eagles held their own on Saturday, trailing Randall by just two goals at halftime (2-0). After Randall got on the board again early in the second half, it looked like things could get out of hand for Faith, but a quick answer by Nathan Stupka cut the lead back to two, and the Eagles had renewed energy and enthusiasm. Another goal by Randall at the 56-minute mark stretched the lead back to three and proved to be the final goal as the Eagles struggled to get any shots on offense. Randall dominated the offensive end, getting 40 shots, while Faith managed just one. Goalkeeper Jason Conable was fantastic, finishing with 19 saves.
Faith travels to Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and returns home for a Homecoming game against Eureka College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
