Eagles Win Fourth Straight Game
ANKENY, Iowa—The Faith Eagles men's soccer team began a tough four-game home stretch with a decisive victory over Union College (5-2) Friday evening, earning an impressive 5-2 victory.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 6-2 on the year. The victory provided great momentum as they ride their hot streak into the most challenging week of the entire season next week with three ranked opponents on the schedule. They'll face tenth-ranked Emmaus on Tuesday, second-ranked Providence on Thursday, and fifth-ranked North Central on Saturday. All three games are at home.
Now at the midway point of the season, the Eagles played their best all-around game of the year, getting solid performances from both the offense and defense. Four different Eagles scored goals, despite the fact they were missing two starting forwards—Chase Clark (who is nursing a minor leg injury), and Jacob Stilwell (who fractured his foot in a game last week).
The underclassmen got things rolling early for Faith as freshman Isaac Mosher scored a goal at 6:53 in the first half off an assist from fellow freshman Daniel Guess, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Eagles. Guess got his second assist of the game twelve minutes later on a goal by Jonathan Hendricks, a sophomore. The Eagles defense held Union College scoreless through the first half and took a 2-0 lead into intermission.
Early in the second half, Jordan Schmidt and Cole Glanzer gave the Eagles two quick goals and a comfortable 4-0 lead before Union College finally got on the board off a penalty kick at the 50:38 mark. Things got a little tight when Union trimmed the lead to 4-2 with 17 minutes to play and plenty of time to make a comeback, but another goal by Jordan Schmidt at 83:26 made it 5-2, Eagles, and seemingly took the wind out of the sails of a frustrated Union squad.
The Eagles finished with an efficient five goals off of ten shots on goal, with four assists: Guess(2), Jason Conable (1), and Baldwin (1). Fouls were even at eight apiece.
Faith's next game is Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against Emmaus (5-2).
