ANKENY, Iowa—It was up to the Eagles men's soccer team to make it a clean sweep for Faith Athletics on Homecoming, and they delivered in exciting fashion with a 3-0 win over Calvary University Saturday afternoon, much to the delight of the large crowd that was on-hand.
The Eagles were playing their second game in 48 hours with heat indexes well into the 90's. Thursday's double-overtime loss at Eureka, Illinois had taken its toll, physically and mentally on the Eagles. It showed throughout much of the first half as the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie at intermission.
Coach Sauser's team got its second wind after halftime, drawing inspiration and energy from the large Homecoming crowd to score two quick goals in the first ten minutes. Nathan Stupka got his first career goal at 52:59, putting the Eagles on top, 1-0. Chase Clark answered at 55:58 with his team-leading seventh goal of the season on an assist from Cole Glanzer.
The Eagles defense held firm, while the offense added another goal at the 87:26 mark from Jacob Stilwell, his first career goal, giving Faith a 3-0 lead, putting the game out of reach for Calvary.
Faith finished with 13 shots on goal, allowing just three for Calvary. The Eagles get a well-deserved break, before heading on the road on Friday to play the same Calvary squad, followed by a game at Ozark Christian College (0-2) on Saturday.
