Men Hold Off Lincoln
Less than 24 hours after a blowout home opening win, the Eagle men earned their second win of the early soccer season, defeating Lincoln Christian University 3-2 in Ankeny. Faith moves to 2-0-0 on the year while Lincoln drops to 0-1-0.
Similar to their home opener, Faith jumped out to an early lead as Josh Bray scored unassisted in the 6th minute. Thirteen minutes later Joseph Frerichs added his 5th goal of the young season and Faith looked to be in control of the match. Faith had several other opportunities throughout the half but couldn't capitalize, going into the break with the 2-0 lead.
A renewed Lincoln squad controlled the second half early on, eventually cracking the defense when a miscommunication in the back of Faith's defense led to a wide open net. The goal brought Lincoln within one. Fatigue seemed to begin to affect the Eagles, as possession and communication broke down. Faith showed flashes of great soccer, though, and eventually freshman Oleg Orlov was able to poke the ball around the keeper to give Faith a two goal cushion in the 68th minute. Lincoln wouldn't go away, as they again took advantage of some disorganization at the back, giving themselves a chance with 15 minutes left in the game. They would get no closer, though, as Faith was able to muster enough energy to pull out the victory.
Faith outshot Lincoln 22-11, however the teams were nearly even with shots on goal at 7-6. Both keepers ended the day with four saves. Faith is off for 10 days before hitting the road for a big game at defending regular season region champion North Central University on Tuesday, September 6. That game is scheduled to kick off at 2:45 PM.
